Allergy Tip of the Day: Latex Allergy

Latex allergy progresses with additional exposure. There are more than 40,000 products worldwide that contain latex. Some of the most popular sources of latex exposure are balloons, gloves, and condoms. Other sources can be rubber-bands, medical equipment, clothing, cosmetics and hygiene products. Latex-free options are available for many of these products, but as with food allergies, it is important that you read every label very carefully. If you have any questions to whether a product contains latex, call the manufacturer or avoid it and find another option. Latex-free products can be more expensive, however, the benefit outweighs the cost. Talk to your doctors about your allergy. Many healthcare facilities have switched to latex-free environments, but never assume they know about your allergy. Be aware of cross-reactive foods as well. Banana, kiwi, avocado and chestnuts contain proteins similar to latex and can cause symptoms.
