Halloween Safety Tips for Kids with Food Allergies

Home » Blog » Halloween Safety Tips for Kids with Food Allergies

October 27, 2025 by Asthma & Allergy Associates, P.C.

Halloween is full of fun costumes and candy, but it can also bring extra challenges for families managing food allergies. With some planning, your child can enjoy a safe and exciting night of trick-or-treating!

Halloween Safety Tips for Kids with Food Allergies

Top Safety Tips

  1. Carry Epinephrine
Always have your child’s epinephrine auto-injector or nasal device while out trick-or-treating.
  2. Wait Before Eating
Check all treats at home before eating, no snacking on the go!
  3. Read Every Label
Fun-size candies can have different ingredients or be made in shared facilities.
  4. Avoid Cross-Contact
Don’t share treats or eat from open bowls.
  5. Trade or Swap
Have safe candy or non-food treats at home for trade-ins.
  6. Watch for the Teal Pumpkin Project
Houses with a teal pumpkin offer non-food treats so all kids can join the fun!
  7. Plan a Safe Route
Visit trusted neighbors or homes that display teal pumpkins.
  8. Stay Allergy-Aware
Costumes and masks can hide triggers; check materials ahead of time.
