Dr. Daniel Soteres appears in Springs Magazine in an article entitled “Healthcare Heroes”. He is one of ten local physicians chosen for this article. Dr. Danny was nominated for his work in pediatric allergies and his clinical research on the treatment of the rare disease Hereditary Angioedema (HAE).
A hero is a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character…a person who, in the opinion of others, has special achievements, abilities, or personal qualities and is regarded as a role model or ideal. Dr. Soteres meets that definition in his care of many patients. Even though none of them were saved by Dr. Soteres from a near drowning, many of them were drowning in fear from their severe food allergies or in fear about their next life threatening attack from their rare Hereditary Angioedema disease. Dr.Danny, as his patients affectionately call him, is a Healthcare Hero not only to his pediatric patients, but to his adult patients as well. The relief from parents is immense when a solution to a tough situation is found.
About 10 years ago, Dr. Danny was approached by a distraught mother of an 8 year old boy with severe peanut allergy. She asked about Food Oral Immunotherapy (OIT) so her son could move away from the peanut-free table at school and live a safer life. Dr. Danny learned about peanut OIT and helped the family achieve this goal. About 6 months later he wrote a note to the school so Luke could sit wherever he wanted during lunch. This was a happy day with immense relief for mother and child. While the food allergy was not cured, the procedure trained his body to tolerate eating several peanuts per day. This reduces the risk of a severe reaction in case of an accidental exposure. Since meeting Luke and his mother 10 years ago, Dr. Danny has performed OIT for children with peanut, almond, milk and egg allergy. He has treated about 100 patients with food allergy.
Dr. Soteres is also an expert in treating the Hereditary Angioedema (HAE) disease. This is a rare disease and his involvement started in much the same way. A mother with HAE came to him and asked for an evaluation to tell if her daughter had the disease. With a little extra time in clinic and by expanding the capabilities of the Research Center in his office, he has been able to participate in research on this rare, yet very treatable disease. Since meeting this family he has been an author on dozens of research articles regarding the disease and newly available treatments. Dr. Danny made a huge difference in the lives of this HAE family as well as others. Another family struggling with the disease spans 3 generations. Dr. Danny helped two of his youngest HAE patients compete in a regional and national science competition highlighting and educating others about this disease. The whole family has been treated extensively by Dr. Daniel Soteres. The clinic often functions as a second home to them as they have all participated in the clinical research trials that have made treatment of this rare disease possible. Dr. Daniel Soteres is a key opinion leader (KOL) in the HAE world. He has extensive publications on the topic and has participated in the clinical research on the disease for about 10 years. The research that the family has participated in has been the girls’ bridge to learning more about their disease and educating others. Dr. Soteres was not only their medical doctor but gave much needed emotional support which boosted their spirits and confidence.
Dr. Danny is a true Healthcare Hero. He’s second to none in his education and training as a doctor in Asthma, Allergy and Immunology. He continues his education with research and participates in FDA approved clinical therapies to improve the lives of his patients. Locally, he often goes to schools to educate about food allergies, and lectures about the HAE disease locally and nationally. And maybe most importantly, he often calls his patients after hours to review labs and other tests and to discuss treatment options!
