Thanksgiving With Food Allergies

Home » Blog » Thanksgiving With Food Allergies

November 17, 2022 by Asthma & Allergy Associates, P.C.

Thanksgiving is a cherished time for gathering with family and friends, but for those with food allergies, it can come with added stress. To help ease the anxiety and make the holiday enjoyable for everyone, the experts at Asthma & Allergy Associates have put together essential tips for a safe and pleasant Thanksgiving.

Tips for a Safe and Enjoyable Holiday

1. Hosting Tips:

If you’re hosting, be proactive and ask your guests if anyone has food allergies. For those with specific dietary restrictions, you can find helpful food substitutes for common allergens like milk, wheat, eggs, and peanuts at FARE (Food Allergy Research & Education)

2. Attending as a Guest:

If you or a loved one has food allergies and you’ll be a guest, reach out to the host ahead of time to inform them. To ease any concerns, offer to bring allergy-safe dishes for everyone to enjoy.

3. Eat Before Arriving:

Consider having a hearty breakfast or lunch before the event, as many appetizers may contain allergens such as nuts or seafood.

4. Prepare Your Child:

For parents, discussing what your child can and cannot eat beforehand is crucial. To ensure peace of mind, bring a dish you’ve prepared specifically for your child.

5. Team Up for Safety:

Coordinate with your partner or another adult to take turns watching over children with food allergies. This shared responsibility can help prevent accidental exposures.

6. Keep Epinephrine Nearby:

Always carry at least two epinephrine auto-injectors if prescribed. Being prepared is key to handling unexpected allergic reactions swiftly.

Avoiding ER Visits

The holiday season often sees an increase in food allergy-related emergency room visits. Planning ahead, whether you’re the host or a guest, is vital to creating a safe and enjoyable holiday environment.
